Pros: Easy to use. Does good job for hand sharpening and probably will extend chain life compared to having it sharpened by machine. Less chance of error than holding a file alone. Knew my saw was dull when started seeing sawdust while cutting. 3-4 quick swipes w file on each tooth and seeing shaving strips again. Cons: Does not fit all saws. Have not tried it on my other 2 saws and hope do not need to purchase another to sharpen them. Initial use confusing as frame does not lay perfectly flat against chain - it sits on top of the next saw tooth on my chain creating a slight angle. Leaves you wondering if it really 'fits' your saw blade and is ok or if it should be level with the chain as the instructions indicate.

I think it's a great product both in concept and operation. I think the size was a little too wide (I think I ordered the wrong size) because the file that takes down the "rake" is a little far away and barely makes contact, but if you shove it as you're filing toward the rake it will work anyway.

First off I NEVER write reviews. But here it goes. I was skeptical to buy this stihl sharpener at such a cost as I have a file and a hand to use it (and have access to electric professional sharpeners). However this stihl file make it so easy. There is an obvious difference between what I've sharpened with a flat file (or dremel head or professional electric grinder) and what this stihl file has done. I will, without doubt, persuade anyone who asks (or doesn't) to buy this file. It is very well worth it. I've owned it for a week and have already payed for it in chain sharpening. Honestly I am finding old chains to sharpen just because it is that easy (and effective). Happy cutting. -pt

This tool is very easy to learn how to use and gives a perfect sharpen every time. The key is in the design which holds the files at the correct height. All you have to do is line it up to cut either left or right and then keep it horizontal with 3 or 4 light and consistent full file strokes. Stihl publishes directions on how to use the tool...for sure clamping the bar with something will help steady it. I bought a vise for this that you can hammer in to a log. If you are right handed like me, it can be difficult to get used to the left hand part of the proceudre, but with practice it comes quickly. Marking the start spot on the chain with liquid paper also helps. Make sure you are buying the correct size tool for your chain, Stihl makes about 5 different chains that each need their own fileRead full review
