For those familiar with the latest in model railroading, Pelle Soeeborg needs no introduction. His amazing work has been documented many times in Model Railroader and he's a regular contributor. Based upon his craftsmanship, I decided to snare a copy of his book. The book basically is designed to present short-term projects that most modestly-equipped modelers can do in a day or two. It's a pretty fast read. Overall, the book is satisfactory in generating the motivation to tackle projects and provides excellent photos of Pelle's work. However, it is light on the details necessary to accomplish some of those projects. One example is his weathering techniques. There's no mention about the ratio of paint to thinner to create necessary washes. Other similar necessary details are missing if someone was to use the book as a step-by-step primer. Though many who would be willing to tackle these projects likely have working knowledge of the basic processes he discusses and can fill in the missing gaps, those folks who are novices would probably benefit from obtaining a book that caters to the beginner before reading this. Still, my first model railroading book was certainly beyond my skill sets but it instilled the bug in me. And Pelle's amazing work certainly has same capacity to thrill other newcomers. Overall, I give it a 3.5 out of 5.Read full review
Another great episode in the model railroading saga that is Pelle Soeeborg. In a simple and logical fashion Pelle lays out how to weather a wide range of equipment including: box cars, grain hoppers, tank cars, gondolas, intermodal equipment, and much more. The degree of weathering is also varied from light to heavy. He even transforms a Ready-to-Roll tank car from out-of-the-box “plastic” new into prototypically new. Pelle also uses some off-the-shelf hobby materials to create nice looking custom loads. This book is packed with color photos and is a must have for anyone that is looking to make their models look like the real thing!
This is an excellant book for someone looking to add realism to their trains but has limited time and resources for their project. The articles for D.I.Y. cargos are especially useful. The author assumes that you already have a basic working knowledge of modelling tools and practices.
