I asked a life long resident of Arizona what I should do if I got a full bite from a rattlesnake 8 miles from nowhere and she said, "die." After doing research and finding that snake bite kites do more harm than good, I learned that the only option is to get medical help asap. I got this device so in the event of a bite I can hit the EMO button, lay down, elevate the bite, and wait for emergency responders. While there are other emergency EMO button devices without texting and email, I like the idea that I can text my wife to make certain I've made contact. Instead of just pushing a button and "hoping" it got through.

Product is solid, but you can't do a thing with it until you activate it online via your tablet/computer. Now, either by unfortunate coincidence or poorly maintained websites, I could not activate the product last night. So I called Garmin's support and was on hold for 30 minutes before a rep was available. He advised that they were aware of the system wide outage and would email me when it was back up and I could continue activating. FWIW, I was receiving an error with the phone number I was entering for my profile. The entire thing hung up because it wouldn't take a phone number (no matter what I tried). And, proving I wasn't an idiot, the rep did confirm that's what the error was in the code. Anyhow, I tried a few hours later (about 11pm) and, despite not receiving the email, got to the very end of the process. Only to receive a new error message and it kicked me out. I was met with "activation pending" when attempting to log back in. Of course, the device wouldn't actually activate and the site wouldn't work, so I was stuck in the water until the next (this) morning. On hold for 50 minutes this morning until a rep came online. He was able to manually activate the product and I've spent the day toying with it. I did receive the "system is now working" email later that day. Finally, true to form, I can now send and receive txts with no wireless/wifi signal whatsoever. Completely independent GPS signals. This will serve me well as a pilot flying at higher altitudes. The website, now that I can truly log in, is well laid out. It's only the activation site that is screwed up. The compatible (almost required) Earthmate app is fairly well made. It helps tremendously in sending txts.Read full review

I bought the Delorme inReach SE for about $250 on Ebay. It allowed me to text my wife daily or more often during my month long solo hunt in the wilds of Idaho. When you initiate it, you put in a number of simple messages via a computer such as "I'm OK" etc. Most of the time I just selected that message and hit send. She could text me back however via her cell phone which she did with generally much longer messages. However, the longer messages will cost you more at the end of the month but for a reasonable price you can send as many of the simple pre-recorded messages as you want. When she received my messages it allowed her to view a map and see exactly where I was when I sent the message. If I left it on she could track me. Generally though I would turn it off to save the rechargeable battery which seems to hold a charge for a very long time. In a real emergency off the grid to you or someone else it allows you to send out a call for help to your exact location with the push of a button. There is a monthly fee for it's use but if you keep your comm simple most of the time it's not very expensive. I had mine activated for only a month and the peace of mind my wife would highly agree was worth the cost.Read full review

Not difficult to get up and running... ie getting an account opened, getting its software updated, understanding its button-ology, putting their app on my iPhone and Bluetooth pairing it... etc and then start sending and receiving messages via satellite network within an hour or so. Loads and loads of legal disclaimers to read through however... understandably so as they clearly explain that they don’t own (or control) the satellites nor the cell phone networks that your communication passes through ... nor have control of this hurricane or that disaster. All in all however, still seems to be a great value and service to me. I plan to mainly use it along with a PLB for ocean sailing.
