I came across Madonna’s book, The English Roses, by accident. She has a girls clothing line through boutique brand Lipstik. Anna has quite a few English Roses outfits and LOVES them! I decided to bid on an auction that included an English Roses umbrella (by kidadorable, I believe) and Madonna's book, The English Roses. When they arrived, I let Anna have the umbrella right away...the book, however, sat on my nightstand until I found time to read it...checking it for questionable content. You have to understand, this is Madonna we are talking about! I really couldn't imagine anything she wrote being appropriate for my almost 6-year-old daughter. I realize she is a mother, like me, but I’m pretty sure, other than that fact, we have very little else in common! The book very pleasantly surprised me. The moral of the story is good. I don't find the writing exceptional, but it isn't written to impress me...it is for my daughter and she loves it!Read full review
Madonna address popularity and jealousy issues delicately yet head on from an interesting perspective. Retorical questions involve the reader allowing you to stop the story and answer the questions, as well as stop on your own and ask questions too. This technique is used in advanced reading seminars to help children comprehend what they are reading. It allows them to think about what they are reading rather than glancing over the words. Adorable illustrations compliment the story, which is sweet but not too cotton candyish. The story will help kids dealing with cliques that won't let them in and also reaches the popular kids who won't let others into their group. Additionally, I find it fascinating because Madonna lost her mother when she was young and had to deal with adult situations at an early age. We really don't know what others go through in their lives and this story makes us understand and appreciate that. This book teaches a super lesson and is a great tool for positive parenting.Read full review
I bought this book for a gift, but I read it before I placed it in the giftbox. I love the pictures but even better the story. I felt that this book is a great addition to any children library. The pictures are really beautiful and the message is one in which every child can relate to. I couldn't believe that such a great book was written by the "material girl". Way to go Madonna, and I can not wait to read the next books in her series.
This is such a wonderful book! It has a great story line and beautiful illustrations! I think the story itself is best suited for girls age 8 and up, but my toddler loved the pictures! I looked around for this book and finally found it on Ebay for an awesome price! A great addition to any child's book collection!
I came across this book on ebay and I remembered watching Oprah and she was interviewing Madonna about her new talent in writing stories for young girls. When I saw this book I remembered and I was very interested in having it for my daughter to read. It is a lovely story and it a very positive book and in its own way it helps with a young girls self esteem. I would recommend this book.
