...was disappointed to discover that this refurbished (which apparently now means "pulled out of an old PC and reformatted") drive was manufactured in 2012, five years before I purchased it. Still, I have Seagate and WD drives in my systems that have been running without issue pretty much 24/7 for nearly a decade, and nobody beats Hitachi for performance and reliability, especially in their flagship, enterprise-class Ultrastar line, so I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

I ended up buying two of the hard drives and could not get either to work. I tried installing it in my computer and it would not appear in my bios (msi e34 motherboard) or in disk management/my computer (Windows 10). I swapped out the sata cable and the power cable with a hard drive I have already working in my computer and still nothing. I then plugged the old hard drive back in and it works fine. I then tried putting it into my brother's computer who has a different motherboard than I do(not sure the brand, but it is different). Again it was the same issues, it would not appear in the bios or in disk management. I tried switching from achi to ide to raid modes and it still would not work under any of those settings. I can not for the life of me figure out what is wrong with them. I've built my own computer from the ground up, I have 2 other hard drives and a dvd drive I put in myself, all working in my computer without any problems. They were all plug and play - but not this drive. This drive refuses to work. They both even appear to spin on start up, but they simply refuse to work. I will buy a new drive elsewhere, and a different brand. Hopefully everyone has better luck, but i wouldnt risk it.Read full review

I ordered 4 of these drives. 3 of them have been great. One of them is security locked. So I had to order another drive to use until I can figure out how to unlock the security lock on it. Just formatting it didn't fix it.

Like several other reviewers, I bought these drives to go in a home NAS. As was stated in other reviews, hard drives either die when they're almost new, or they die after a loooooong time. Still, as with any hard drive, if you plan to have important data on these drives, it is a smart practice to use them in a redundant array. I run 6 in a software raid 6, and it is a great bang for the buck storage solution. My drives all had around 19,000 hours on them, which is nothing for an enterprise drive. When I set my NAS to max performance, the drives can get slightly noisy, but nothing crazy. On quiet mode, you can barely hear a thing. If you can get these drives for anywhere from $53 to $50, I'd absolutely recommend it.

I purchased two drives. One of the drives is perfectly fine; the other drive is NOISY. It grinds away ANY and EVERY time it's accessed. Request to return & exchange was denied - as a prior Newegg customer, I can't reconcile continuing to do business with them after this.
